Because I spent more than a decade in China, much of that reporting on China’s automotive industry, I have a bit of a soft spot for buy sell stories with an international angle. This week I have what may be a scoop – Capital Automotive is looking to expand outside the U.S. Sure, it just bought some dealership real estate in Canada, you scoff. True, but CARS is also looking beyond North America, Willie Beck tells me. Its new owner, Brookfield Property, is in many countries, an added advantage.
Consolidation is a trend in the U.S. and Canada, and big auto groups are generally seen as the drivers of this trend. While that is the case, some very small groups are also growing. This week I talk with the owner of one of those small groups, who has just acquired three more franchises and is now set to brand his growing enterprise.
